Check your drawers: that 2€ coin you got at school could be worth a real fortune today

This 2€ coin given to all pupils for the 2024 Olympic Games is now worth a small fortune on the internet. Here’s why it’s driving collectors crazy. You may have it in your hands without even knowing it… This 2€ coin, given to millions of pupils in France, is now selling for a fortune on the internet! This simple piece of metal, minted for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, has become a little nugget for collectors. And some don’t hesitate to put hundreds of euros on the table to get it. Amazing, isn’t it?

Distributed to all primary school pupils in 2024, this commemorative 2€ coin was originally intended as a nice nod to the Olympic Games. But in the space of a few months, it has become the object of everyone’s desire. Here’s why.

An Olympic coin that’s causing a stir in playgrounds… and online auctions

It was originally an initiative of the French government, launched in the spring of 2024. Each primary school pupil received a special 2€ coin, created by the Monnaie de Paris. The aim? To convey Olympic values and arouse children’s curiosity about the symbols of the Republic. What a nice educational idea!

Engraved with a stylized Eiffel Tower and the famous Olympic rings, the coin came with a small explanatory booklet. As a result, teachers used it to talk about history, civics and the Olympic Games. But very quickly, the tone of the discussions changed in the playgrounds…

The children realized that this 2 euro coin had a much greater value than what it displayed. On the internet, it ended up being sold at completely crazy prices: 50€, 300€, sometimes even up to 1000€ in some ads! Enough to turn heads… and create tension. Some schools even had to intervene to calm the euphoria.

Speculation, false scarcity and real collector’s items

So, is it a jackpot or just collective excitement? The Monnaie de Paris has finally clarified the situation: four million copies have been distributed to schools, and a further 24 million are planned for the general public. Suffice to say that this 2 euro coin is not that rare after all…

For a coin to be truly “collectible”, there often need to be fewer than two million in circulation. This is not the case here. On the other hand, there are indeed premium versions of this coin, manufactured in ultra-limited quantities, with superior quality finishes. These can be worth a lot and be of interest to true numismatists.

Sales for several hundred euros? Probably a flash in the pan or very special cases (impeccable condition, coin in blister pack, typing error, etc.). So before buying or selling, it’s best to find out more and not get carried away by speculation.

One coin, one generation, one memory

Even if its real value remains modest, this 2 euro coin has left its mark on a whole generation. More than a collector’s item, it symbolizes a unique moment: the Olympic Games at home, discussions between children and a good lesson on money and its value.

And you, did you keep it? Who knows, in a few years, it might really be worth a fortune… or at least a nice childhood memory.
